Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral, which can be found in rock, sediment or soil. Asbestos is known to have strong fibres that are heat resistant and have excellent insulating properties. Due to these properties, asbestos was seen as being very useful for building products.

However, asbestos becomes a health risk when its fibres are released into the air and breathed in. These fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Asbestos removal is a common component of demolition or refurbishment works.
